The making of 'Kirk' PDF Print E-mail
  The Weird and wonderful:

Props: The white Peacock wing feather quills came from a Jewish rabbi who was writing about Kirk.. but the Star Trek Enterprise one. Bought them on e-bay from USA.

The first question at Culross was what time period are you working on and we said 1680 - 1690 and the Chair in front of us had a huge date carved on its back of 1681.

I asked 'Peaches' of Killearn, the dress makers, for a price to make a Lady of the Loch dress, and Tracy said.. That's right up my street let me make it for you!

Upon asking a friend who is an artist (Ron Wilson of Perth) for help with the Kirk drawings, he said my daughter would love to help, and her name is Carol Angel (she had changed her name to Angel) and loves trees and faeries. She sells huge oil canvases of trees!!

The National Library of Scotland had one of Kirk's notebooks and sent us some pages (copies).  I found a font on line, very like Kirk's hand writing...just by accident. It is an unfinished font.. '(Suwa' some Capitals are missing).. it looks just like Kirks handwriting.

While on the phone doing some research someone told me about a short film that had been made by the BBC ALBA about Kirk, we managed to get a copy for £10 and it has been useful in the costume design sense.

We talked about needing a baby, and the next thing we saw a very pregnant woman, who on being approached said we could have her baby in June for the scenes we needed.. and it has now been born and is a boy!!

We asked Culross Abbey if we could film there and asked for a Saturday, Betty said it would probably be booked for a wedding as lots of Saturdays are wedding days. We needed the 13 June.. it was not booked. Lucky for us.

We are struggling for funding and out of the blue comes a phone call from an old lady who had read about our film, said she liked the people at Culross Palace, even though she was not fit to go up the stairs to see inside the Palace she was treated really well by the staff and felt she had had a good visit.. she is going to send us some money. ( This lady sent a whopping £500 and later phoned to say she will send more towards production costs.) another £500 was sent later.)

We needed a cradle and a nice one came up on e-bay, (a Blairgowrie seller Period Pieces Blairgowrie) starting at £100. I asked him that if it did not sell may we hire it for the day, he said yes. It did not sell and we got a loan of it. ( for only modest donation for the cost of fuel that was used for the delivery and return.)

AND AGAIN REALLY FAERIE LUCK comes into play. the cost of costumes... £545 did not include vat, Dress Circle of York were registered for V.A.T. but did not have their VAT number yet.... I asked if we paid today could we get out of vat and she said yes!!! The fact was he had only just enough money to pay the £545.

The first draft of the film had Mrs Kirk as Amy and Michael the director though it didn't sound right, so changed it to Abigail. On Tuesday 9 June, Mark (actor playing Rev Robert Kirk, phoned to say he was researching his character and found out the Kirk's second wife was called Abigail, we had no knowledge of this before then.

 On the same day.

I took out the candles we would be using as props, I decided to light them as having new unlit candles all round the set would look silly. As I lit the third candle there was a power cut in my village of Balfron!!! It lasted for about 3 hours!!!

Baby Ben performed perfectly and his mum said No problem - it was fun to see how it's all done. I think you must have very good instincts to pick a 'bump' that happened to be a dark haired boy perfect for the role! Just let us know when the film will be shown as will be great to watch

On Sunday 14 June the Coach driver was wearing a dog collar and the cast though he was just having fun..... but he was the REAL MINISTER OF Aberfoyle..Richard Grosse is his name!!

Michael Ferns lives in a street named after a minister 'Burns Begg Crescent'. He was a very well liked man who served the village of Balfron for a very long Time. (Michael calls his company B.BEGG MEDIA.)

Ryan the ‘Best Boy' realised he had met Joan the producer when he was a child. He had come to her house with his gran to book a TAGS trip to Ireland. He said he remembers me saying there were 77 people going on the holiday(to Ireland) and 77 people were booked. He remembered that because his gran's age was 77.

We bought a huge family bible to use as a prop. The date was written in Roman Numerals it was not until after the film we realized the date was 1861. And would have been in use in Robert Kirk's time.
